Antioxidants in Essential Oil Preparations: Why Prevention Matters

Antioxidants are readily available for your preparations, and they should be added before oxidation occurs—not after.

When working with essential oils, particularly citrus oils such as Sweet Orange, understanding oxidation is an important part of responsible formulation. Oxidation is a natural chemical process that occurs when oils are exposed to oxygen, but it can be accelerated by factors such as heat, light and repeated exposure to air.

Once oxidation has taken place, adding an antioxidant will not reverse the chemical changes that have already occurred. Antioxidants are therefore most useful as a preventative measure, helping to slow oxidation and extend the useful life of a fresh preparation.

This is particularly important when working with oils that are naturally more prone to oxidation, such as Sweet Orange, which contains a high proportion of d-limonene.

What Is an Antioxidant?

An antioxidant is a substance that helps slow oxidation by reacting with compounds involved in the oxidation process. In simple terms, it helps protect oils from breaking down as quickly when they are exposed to oxygen.

This is different from a preservative.

A preservative is primarily used to protect a formulation from microbial growth, such as bacteria, yeast and mould. This is especially important in water-containing products such as creams and lotions.

An antioxidant, on the other hand, helps protect oils and fats from oxidative deterioration.

The two serve different purposes, and one cannot be substituted for the other.

For example, if you are making a cream containing water, an appropriate cosmetic preservative may be necessary to protect the product from microbial contamination. An antioxidant may also be useful to help protect the oils within the formulation from oxidation.

Understanding this distinction is important because adding an antioxidant does not make a water-based product microbiologically safe.

Why Is Sweet Orange Oil Particularly Relevant?

Sweet Orange essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy and personal care preparations because of its fresh, uplifting aroma. However, its high concentration of d-limonene also makes oxidation an important consideration.

D-limonene is a naturally occurring component found in many citrus essential oils. In its fresh state, it is generally well tolerated by most people when used appropriately.

The problem occurs as the oil ages and is exposed to oxygen.

Over time, d-limonene can oxidise and form oxidation products, including limonene hydroperoxides. These oxidation products are considerably more sensitising than the original limonene.

This means that an essential oil that was well tolerated when fresh may present a greater risk of skin sensitisation as it becomes increasingly oxidised.

This is one reason why simply considering an essential oil's original chemical composition is not always enough. How the oil has been stored and how old it is can also influence its suitability for topical use.

What Causes Essential Oils to Oxidise?

Oxidation is influenced by several environmental factors.

Oxygen:  The main driver of oxidation. Every time a bottle is opened, oxygen enters the headspace of the container and comes into contact with the oil.

A bottle that is opened frequently will generally experience more oxygen exposure than one that is opened occasionally.

This is one reason why purchasing very large bottles may not always be practical if the oil will take a long time to use.

Heat:  Can accelerate chemical reactions, including oxidation.

Essential oils should therefore be stored away from sources of heat and preferably in a cool, stable environment.

Avoid leaving bottles in hot cars, near radiators or in other areas where temperatures fluctuate significantly.

Light:  Particularly strong or prolonged exposure, can also contribute to degradation.

For this reason, essential oils are commonly stored in dark-coloured glass bottles. Keeping them away from direct sunlight provides an additional layer of protection.

Repeated Opening:  Even if a bottle is stored correctly, repeatedly opening it introduces fresh oxygen.

Good storage practices therefore work alongside the use of antioxidants. An antioxidant is not a substitute for proper storage.

So, When Should You Add an Antioxidant?

The key point is before oxidation occurs.

An antioxidant is intended to help slow the oxidation process while the oil is still in good condition. It cannot restore an oil to its original state once significant oxidation has already taken place.

Think of an antioxidant as preventative protection rather than a treatment for an already damaged oil.

For this reason, if you are preparing a fresh blend containing oxidation-prone oils, adding an appropriate antioxidant at the formulation stage can help protect the oils throughout their shelf life.

This is particularly useful for preparations that may be stored for an extended period.

Vitamin E

One commonly available option is vitamin E, specifically α-tocopherol (d-alpha tocopherol).

Vitamin E is widely used in cosmetic and oil-based formulations because of its antioxidant properties. It can help protect oils from oxidative deterioration when used appropriately.

It is important, however, to understand that not every product labelled simply as "vitamin E" is necessarily the same.

Different forms of vitamin E are available, including natural and synthetic forms and different tocopherol derivatives. When selecting an antioxidant specifically for protecting essential oils or carrier oils from oxidation, the type and concentration of the ingredient matter.

Pure vitamin E can also be extremely thick and viscous. This can make it difficult to measure, mix and distribute evenly in a small preparation.

It may therefore be easier to pre-dilute it with a suitable carrier oil before incorporating it into the final formulation.

As with any formulation ingredient, follow the supplier's recommended usage rate rather than assuming that adding more will provide greater protection.

More is not necessarily better.

Rosemary Oil Extract (ROE)

Another option is Rosemary Oil Extract, commonly abbreviated to ROE.

ROE is a concentrated antioxidant extract obtained from rosemary leaves. It should not be confused with rosemary essential oil.

Although both come from rosemary, they are very different ingredients and perform different functions.

Rosemary essential oil is an aromatic essential oil used primarily for its fragrance and other properties. ROE is used in formulations for its antioxidant activity.

ROE can be particularly useful in oil-based preparations where the aim is to slow oxidative deterioration of oils and fats.

As with vitamin E, the concentration and recommended usage rate depend on the specific product. Always check the manufacturer's information and formulation guidance for the particular ROE you are using.

Antioxidant vs Preservative: Don't Confuse the Two

This distinction deserves repeating because it is a common source of confusion.

If you make a simple blend of essential oils and carrier oils, oxidation may be one of your primary concerns.

If you make a cream or lotion containing water, you have an additional concern: microbial contamination.

An antioxidant does not prevent bacteria, yeast or mould from growing in a water-based product.

Likewise, a preservative designed to control microbial growth does not necessarily provide protection against oxidation.

A properly formulated product may therefore require both antioxidant protection and an appropriate preservative system, depending on its ingredients and intended shelf life.

What If the Oil Has Already Oxidised?

This is where timing becomes particularly important.

If an essential oil has already undergone significant oxidation, adding vitamin E or ROE will not reverse the chemical changes that have occurred.

In other words, antioxidants can help slow further oxidation, but they cannot turn an oxidised oil back into a fresh one.

Signs that an oil may have deteriorated can include changes in its aroma, colour or appearance. However, these changes are not always reliable indicators of the extent of oxidation.

An oil can undergo chemical changes without obvious visual signs.

For this reason, relying solely on smell or appearance to determine whether an oil has oxidised is not ideal.

If you suspect that an essential oil has become significantly oxidised, particularly if it is intended for topical application, the safest approach is to avoid using it on the skin.

Depending on the oil and its condition, it may be more appropriate to discard it or use it for a suitable non-topical purpose, such as household cleaning.

Prevention Starts With Good Storage

Adding an antioxidant is only one part of protecting your essential oils.

Good storage practices remain essential.

Keep essential oils:

  • In tightly closed containers
  • Away from direct sunlight
  • Away from excessive heat
  • In a cool, stable environment
  • In appropriately sized containers where practical
  • Away from unnecessary repeated exposure to air

For oxidation-prone oils such as Sweet Orange, purchasing smaller quantities that can be used within a reasonable period may also be preferable to keeping a large bottle for years.

The less time an oil spends exposed to oxygen, heat and light, the better.

The Bottom Line

Antioxidants are not something you add only when you think an oil has already gone off.

They are a preventative tool.

For fresh oil-based preparations, ingredients such as d-alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) or Rosemary Oil Extract (ROE) can help slow oxidation and protect oils from oxidative deterioration.

This is particularly relevant when working with Sweet Orange and other citrus essential oils that contain high levels of d-limonene.

The most important point to remember is that an antioxidant cannot reverse oxidation once it has occurred. Adding one to an already oxidised oil does not restore the oil's original chemical profile or remove the oxidation products that have formed.

Instead, think about antioxidant protection at the beginning of the formulation process.

Start with fresh, good-quality oils, add an appropriate antioxidant where suitable, store the preparation correctly and minimise exposure to oxygen, heat and light.

This preventative approach gives your essential oil preparations the best opportunity for maintaining their quality and reducing the risks associated with oxidation throughout their intended shelf life.
