This foundation course acts a great introduction to the ancient Indian life science of Ayurveda. By explaining the basics of this complex form of natural medicine you will be provided with enough knowledge to incorporate foundation Ayurveda into a pre-existing practice, or to have substantial background knowledge for further study into this interesting therapy.

Module One - Philosphical Theory behind Ayurvedic Medicine

This module will take you on a journey through the historical background and philosophical theories that have ensured Ayurveda remains one of the most sought - after forms of natural medicine.

What you will learn in this Module:

  • A journey from Ayurveda's past and into its current present
  • The Core philosophies central to Ayurvedic medicine
  • How Ayurvedic influences the body, mind and soul
  • Concepts of karma, prana and energy
  • What Ayurveda aims to accomplish
  • The Sankhya philosophy
  • The five senses (essence of stava) and five elements of Ayurveda
  • Learn how to use your inner light to heal
  • The responsibilities and principles of the three doshas

Module Two - The Ayurvedic Blueprint of the Individual.
Central to Ayurveda is how the body is structured, and in this module you will be guided through the concept of the Ayurvedic body so that you are able to recognise and identify underlining philosophies unique to each body type (doshas) and their correlating characteristics and personalities.

What will you learn in this Module?

  • The relationship between the three doshas and five elements defined
  • How we are all unique combinations of three doshas and five elements
  • The theory of balanced doshas for good health, and imbalanced doshas for poor health
  • Our purpose in life and four great aims (Purusharthas)
  • Characteristics aspects of the three doshas - Vatta, Pitta, Kapha - explained
  • How you can determine your own mind-body constitution (Prakruti)
  • The Ayurvedic lifestyle for balance, including Body Clock doasha types

Module Three - Ayurvedic Understanding of Health.
How does health relate to the balanced state of the three doshas, the seven tissues, the three wastes and the gastric fire? Study the insightful module as it covers the importance of a balanced Ayurvedic system for good health and wellbeing, explaining how imbalance in just one system can cause poor health in the body.

  • The importance if balance for the three doshas
  • The importance if balance for the seven basic bodily tissues (Dhatus)
  • The importance if balance for the waste product system (Malas)
  • The importance if balance for the gastric fire (Agni)
  • The seven substances
  • The channels of flow and channel blockages

  • The disease process, including causes, and eventual management
  • Ayurvedic interpretations of the ulse, tongue, eyes and nails in a clinical examination

Module Four - Ayurveda and the Mind Body Connection
This module introduces you to the nature of the Mind and Body connection in terms of health, balance and wellbeing, and goes further by demonstrating the importance of Breath to vitality and purification, and explaining the Chakra system in terms of balance and health and maintenance.

What will you learn in this Module?

  • Discover how the mind/psychology influences the body in terms of health and disease
  • Ayurveda's view on relationships and the emotions associated with them, as well as sexual activity, in the context of balanced health and wellbeing
  • How to transform negative feelings - letting them out of your system in a healthy and beneficial way
  • Be introduced to complementary medicine philosophy and the holistic approach
  • Know which Vyayam (yoga stretching) is beneficial to which dosha
  • How to bathe in the Elements to maximise purification and stimulation
  • The Power of Breathing
  • The Chakra System - how each correlates to specific areas of the body, and how we can balance them to maintain or restore health and wellbeing

Module Five - Ayurvedic Fields of Living
This module demonstrates how we can restore and maintain balance in our fields of living, through mediation and other practices, and therefore prevent disease and other imbalances from manifesting in our lives.

  • The nine fundamental material causes of disease in the body
  • Five organs of cognition / five organs of action
  • The power of meditation for health and well being (comprehensive)
  • Patanjali's eight-limbed system, including expanding awareness
  • Case Studies: exploring causes and treatments for Insomnia and Menopause
  • Brief introduction to aromatherapy and astrology within the Ayurvedic context

Module Six - Ayurvedic Practitioner Guidelines
This  module is packed full of useful advice and tips to begin practicing as an Ayurveduc consultant. Based on Michael Weir's book Complementary Medicine Ethics and Law (available at the College) you will have access to a wealth of knowledge ranging from ethical, professional and legal behaviour required from you as a complementary therapist, to business plans and client care.

What will you learn in this Module?

  • Industry regulations, ethics, legal obligation and professional care required from a complementary therapist
  • The importance of Professional Indemnity insurance
  • Client health and care - includes honesty, warning of risks and confidentiality
  • What is required from you if you need to act as a witness in court
  • Maintaining client records
  • Framework of setting up a business
  • Framework of establishing a business plan

The assessment is optional for this course though it is required if you wish to obtain your certificate.
